As a part of our efforts to build meaningful relationships with our neighbors, SOS Volunteer Centre received a federal grant to support this program initiative of building understanding and expanding knowledge between Elders and Seniors. As an organization dedicated to fostering cultural awareness and appreciation, we deeply value the vast knowledge and wisdom held by the First Nations Elders. We recognize that their teachings and experiences offer invaluable insights into the history, culture, and traditions of your communities. Through our learning endeavors, we aim to: * Deepen our understanding of First Nations cultures and perspectives * Foster respectful and meaningful relationships between residents, our organization, and Indigenous communities * Create opportunities for our members to engage in cultural exchange and build bridges of reconciliation together We believe that direct engagement with Elders is essential to gaining a genuine and authentic understanding of your traditions. We would like to collaborate with your community Elders or knowledge keepers and seek guidance moving toward meaningful acts of reconciliation in our region.

The Blanket Exercise uses Indigenous methodologies to build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. Everyone is actively involved as they step onto blankets that represent the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later Métis peoples. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy.
Lead by Barbara Jagodics of Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society.
